Donetsk Region Museum of Local Lore, Donetsk Region

Museum Crisis Center supports Donetsk Region Museum of Local Lore.

Workers of the Museum changed their workplace twice in the last 8 years: in 2014 after the occupation of Donetsk city they were forced to move to Kramatorsk, and in 2022 - to Lviv region.

"In March 2022, we considered moving to Dnipro. But it was also too close to the front line, so our colleagues from this city dissuaded us. Then personal contacts helped - we knew the staff of the “Ancient Zvenyhorod” reserve. They agreed to accept us as an institution and help the families with resettlement," says Yuriy Koval, acting director of the Donetsk Regional Museum of Local Lore.

In 2014 there was no possibility of transferring any exhibits out of the city that was no longer controlled by the Ukrainian government. So there was a need to start from the very beginning. However, three more branches of the museum remained on the government-controlled territory.

"
The city of Kramatorsk was chosen for re-registration because it is one of the largest cities in Donetsk region. The regional authorities also moved there," explains Yurii Koval. - "The museum in Kramatorsk was officially re-registered only in 2016. The first exhibits in our collections are archaeological finds from excavations of mounds in 2017, which were carried out in Donetsk region by the Institute of Archeology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine with the participation of museum staff.”

In 2022 the platform for work was given to colleagues from Donetsk by Historical and Cultural reserve “Ancient Zvenyhorod” in Lviv region.

During the nine months of joint work, the museum staff of both institutions held two scientific seminars, presented a relocated museum, and organized several archaeological workshops for children. In particular, Yurii Koval held workshops on creating copies of primitive tools made of flint.

"Our colleague Yuriy Koval is an archaeologist. We are a reserve created on an archaeological site. We easily found a common language. We are glad that we have the opportunity to share space. For us, this cooperation is also very interesting and gives us new opportunities," said the acting director of the reserve, Romana Lev.

During the nine months of cooperation, the museum of the Ancient Zvenyhorod Reserve provided space for two thematic exhibitions of the Donetsk Regional Museum of Local Lore. Donetsk museum workers organized several more exhibitions online.
